About Lara Ellis
A little about me:
I was born and raised in California and Oregon so being outdoors was always an important part of my life. My family and I used to camp all up and down the California and Oregon Coast as soon as I was old enough to camp at the age of 4. The beauty of nature was a form of inspiration and healing to me and still is to this day. On our camping trips I made it a point to talk with the rangers at the visitors centers and to learn about the native wildlife and plant life and even insect life of an area. Whenever I saw a new bird it was an exciting quest to find the name of the bird in our bird guide.
My parents were not professional photographers but they planted the photography seed in me through example. I still remember the first time my father let me use his camera. The photo I shot was not that exciting (a photo of a street sign) but to me it was magic to record something in that little black box. Before my mother had decided to marry and have a family she traveled overseas to Germany and Japan and took many slide photos of her travels. Instead of movie night, in our home we would have slide night. My parents would dim the lights and bring out the slide projector and on our living room wall would appear magical images of ice festivals in Japan or scenes from Germany.
It wasn't until my 20s that I honed my photography skills when I met my husband (also an avid photographer) who taught me much of what I know today about the technical side of photography and how to make the camera do what you want it to do rather than the other way around. Between my husband and the books and articles I have read over the years I guess you could say I was partly mentored and partly self-taught in the art of photography.
I shoot most of my photos in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia near the Shenandoah National Park but I also have photos from Oregon and Assateague Island, Virginia in my collection.
My photos are available as fine art prints (with or without mats & frames), canvases, metal prints, acrylic prints, greeting cards and I-phone and Galaxy phone cases can be found here. Thank you for visiting my website and I hope you find the perfect piece of fine art nature photography you are looking for.
