Spring means color and not just flowers in the Shenandoah Valley. Spring is also when the colorful little flying gems known as hummingbirds return to the valley where they will stay until September when they make their southern journey. These speedy little fliers nest in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This year in 2013 we have 6 that have returned so if all goes well we will have many more by the end of the season when their babies hatch out.
A little about me: I was born and raised in California and Oregon so being outdoors was always an important part of my life. My family and I used to camp all up and down the California and Oregon Coast as soon as I was old enough to camp at the age of 4. The beauty of nature was a form of inspiration and healing to me and still is to this day. On our camping trips I made it a point to talk with the rangers at the visitor's centers and to learn about the native wildlife and plant life and even insect life of an area. Whenever I saw a new bird it was an exciting quest to find the name of the bird in our bird guide.
