This male pileated woodpecker was nice enough to pose for my husband and I in March 2014 at the end of a very long cold winter in the Shenandoah Valley blue ridge mountains. We now have a mating pair and are hoping to capture some photos of thier babies this Spring as well if we can locate the nest.
About Lara Ellis
A little about me: I was born and raised in California and Oregon so being outdoors was always an important part of my life. My family and I used to camp all up and down the California and Oregon Coast as soon as I was old enough to camp at the age of 4. The beauty of nature was a form of inspiration and healing to me and still is to this day. On our camping trips I made it a point to talk with the rangers at the visitor's centers and to learn about the native wildlife and plant life and even insect life of an area. Whenever I saw a new bird it was an exciting quest to find the name of the bird in our bird guide. My parents were not professional photographers but they planted the photography seed in me through example. I still...
